An American defense analyst says North Korea appears to be on track to complete two new hovercraft bases near the Northern Limit Line in the Yellow Sea.
Joseph Bermudez said in a piece for the Center for Strategic and International Studies that based on satellite imagery, the North's specialized hovercraft units in Sasulpo and Yonbong-ni could pose a greater threat to the region because they are modernized.
He said if construction there continues at its present pace, a majority of the facilities will be completed next year.
Bermudez added that if the regime redeploys units to Yonbong-ni, not only would it represent the furthest forward deployment of any North Korean hovercraft unit to date, but also constitute a rise in threat to South Korean islands and ports in the area. ■
