The Seoul Metropolitan Government will invest around 1.4 trillion won over the next four years to turn the city into a "capital of big data."

The initiative, unveiled by Mayor Park Won-soon last Wednesday, is part of the municipal government's smart city project.

Seoul city says it will install 50,000 Internet of Things smart sensors across the capital to collect data on fine dust, foot and vehicle traffic and other matters that are closely related to the lives of its residents.

The collected data will then be analyzed and saved at a public big data storage system to be built this year.

In addition, the government will introduce 3D virtual reality technology to its urban planning.

Its "Virtual Seoul" system will be built by 2021, digitally recreating the city's entire environment and facilitating predictions about urban change.

It will also introduce chatbots to its 120 Dasan Call Center, a civil complaints hotline, to allow an artificial intelligence system to answer citizens' questions automatically via text message.

The city government will install over 17,000 intelligent surveillance cameras throughout the city by 2021 to automatically monitor brawls and other forms of misconduct and relay the information to police or fire stations in real-time.
