Critically acclaimed sci-fi film 'Gravity' opened strongly here in Korea amassing 714,000 admissions generating 6.29 million U.S dollars.
IMAX and 3D screenings have helped boost its revenue, which is likely to continue based on its high reservation rate, which has been consistently over 40%.
The film starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney and directed by Alfonso Curon has already generated oscar buzz and has been seen by many critics as one of the best films of the year. This has resulted in box office success generating 289 million dollars worldwide in less than three weeks.
Meanwhile in second place was Hwayi generating over 365,000 admissions and is set to meet the 2 million mark imminently. Given the film's R rating owing to strong violence, the film directed by Jang Joon-hwan and starring Kim Yoon-suk and Yeo Jin-goo has been seen as a box office office after attracting such figures.
In third place was Lee Joon-ik's 'Hope' which has continued to attract viewers having now amassed over 2.3 million admissions on the back of strong reviews and word-of-mouth.
Moving on to this weekend 'Captain Phillips' directed by Paul Greengrass about a merchant mariner kidnapped by Somali pirates starring Tom Hanks is now in theaters. Much like many of Greengrass' other films such as the Bourne Ultimatum, it's attracted wide acclaim.
