Prosecutors have indicted 34 people following a reinvestigation into toxic humidifier disinfectants manufactured and sold in the country.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office said 16 of them are former executives and workers at SK Chemicals, Aekyung Industrial, E-Mart and GS Retail among others, charged with involuntary manslaughter.
They are accused of manufacturing and selling toxic sterilizers without properly verifying their safety.
An environment ministry official was also booked without detention for leaking confidential information related to the case and abetting the destruction of evidence.
The reinvestigation came after a 2011 scandal involving toxic humidifier disinfectants sold by Oxy Reckitt Benckiser that was linked to the deaths of more than 100 people.■
