The 23rd Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang officially kicks off this evening with what's expected to be a spectacular and emotional opening ceremony.

It will start a 17-day competition that will determine the best of the best in winter sports.

Our Ron Chang reports from Pyeongchang.

Though many details about the opening ceremony are under wraps, we know it'll unfold under a key theme.

Titled "Peace in Motion," the ceremony will tell the story of five children from Gangwon Province traveling through time in the search for peace.

The director of the ceremony, Song Seung-whan, said 3,000 performers will introduce the world to a winter fairy tale.

It will also highlight both traditional and modern Korean culture.

But all eyes will be on the South and North Koreans who will march into the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium as one, for the first time in nearly 12 years, under the Korean Unification Flag.

Attendees, including foreign dignitaries such as U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will be among those bracing the cold during the two-hour long event.

Weather experts say temperatures will hover between minus 5 and minus 2 degrees tonight in Pyeongchang, but it could feel more like minus 10 degrees with the wind chill.

Everyone at the opening will be provided with several items to keep them warm, including blankets and heat packs.

The final leg of the Olympic torch relay will also light the Olympic cauldron, marking the official start of the Winter Games, and wishing all athletes good luck.
