With hopes to finally find their loved ones nearly three years after the disaster, bereaved family members of those still missing from the Sewol tragedy appeared to be overwhelmed with mixed feelings, as part of the ship rose to the surface early this morning.
They were excited as the ferry finally emerged from the water, but many of them also burst into tears and were distressed at the sight of the rusted and destroyed vessel.
They are watching the much-anticipated operation unfolding from a boat near the site.
There is still some hope that the bodies of the nine still unaccounted for may still be trapped inside the Sewol, which is why raising the ship intact has been a key demand of the victims' families.
Meanwhile, as the salvage operation is now underway, the upcoming launch of an inspection committee to determine the exact cause of the sinking is drawing attention.
Based upon agreement between rival parties, the committee will be comprised of five people selected by parties, and three people recommended by representatives of the victims' families.
The bereaved families however, requested today to allow family members of those still missing, to also have rights to recommend the committee members.
