The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned North Korea for its latest nuclear test.
The detonation was the most powerful of the five so far carried out by Pyongyang.

After an emergency closed-door meeting, the security council issued a statement accusing North Korea of showing flagrant disregard for previous UN resolutions on its nuclear activities.
It said members of the council will begin work immediately on appropriate measures including further sanctions.
Among the permanent members of the security council, the U.S. France and Britain would all like to see stronger action to punish Pyongyang.
But as usual, China, North Korea's closest ally will hold a key to the strength of any new measures, and how effectively they're implemented. ■
