The health ministry has confirmed today, an additional person has died from MERS disease, bringing the total number of related deaths to four.
The latest fatality was a 76-year-old patient who died yesterday, after testing positive for the virus on May 21st.
Also the ministry reported five new cases have been diagnosed.
They include a 45-year-old Air Force chief master sergeant, which represents the first MERS case among members of the military.
These latest developments come as Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon is calling for hundreds of citizens to stay home.
In an emergency briefing last night, Park said a MERS-infected doctor attended large-scale events last weekend, despite being ordered into quarantine.
According to the mayor, the doctor attended a union meeting of over 1,500 people for the reconstruction of an apartment complex in Gaepo-dong on Saturday.
He also reportedly attended two meetings of medical societies and visited several other public places.
Mayor Park is criticizing the central government for not sharing its information with the city and not doing enough to contain the virus.
He vowed to devise the city's own countermeasures to protect local citizens.■
