Rival parties are clashing over an upcoming visit by North Korea's top party official, General Kim Yong-chol, who will be in South Korea to attend the closing ceremony of the PyeongChang Olympics.
Some 70 Liberty Korea Party lawmakers, including Floor Leader Kim Sung-tae, held a rally in front of Cheong Wa Dae this morning, saying Kim should not step foot in the country, alleging that he masterminded the sinking of South Korea's Cheonan warship in 2010.
The minor opposition Bareunmirae Party is also demanding the government immediately scrap the decision to allow his visit.
The ruling Democratic Party on the other hand, criticized the opposition parties, calling on them to stop such behaviors to ruin the positive spirit during the Olympics.
They also pointed out that Kim was a North Korean representative during the 2014 military talks between the two Koreas backed by the previous Park Geun-hye administration.■
