President Moon Jae-in has issued a special public message, vowing every effort to curb the spread of the SARS-like virus from China. President Moon also asked the public to have trust in the government and not to be too anxious as the country is making every effort necessary. He added that a 24-hour response system is in operation to respond quickly to any emergency. • ≡ S. Korea's Trade Deficit With Japan Drops To Lowest In 16 Years: KITA

South Korea's trade deficit with Japan dropped to its lowest level in 16 years last year amid a trade row between the two countries. According to Korea International Trade Association, Seoul posted a trade deficit of 19.16 billion dollars with Tokyo in 2019, the largest than with any other country. However, the figure still represents the lowest since 2003. South Korea's imports of Japanese goods plunged 12.9 percent, while exports dropped 6.9 percent on-year. Japan's export restrictions against South Korea imposed in July last year appears to have led to the decrease in the trade deficit.■ <Image: Yonhap News>[2020.01.26]

  • ≡ Less Americans Think N. Korea Poses 'Very Serious Threat' To Their Country

A recent poll shows less Americans consider North Korea a greater threat to national security. According to a joint survey by CNN and research firm SSRS on over 1,150 adults in mid-January, 29 percent said they think the North poses a "very serious threat" to their country. It marks the lowest percentage since the question was first asked in 2009, when 52 percent surveyed said likewise. Meanwhile, around 13 percent said Pyongyang was "no threat at all," the highest level since 2015. Meanwhile, the poll showed that Americans see Iran and Russia as more serious threats. The survey apparently reflects eased concerns among Americans over the North's nuclear and missile programs following its denuclearization talks with Washington in 2018.■ <Image: Yonhap News> [2020.01.26]
